RAEE Portugal: Movilex Breaks Historical Record with 7,000 Tonnes in 2025

Movilex, a benchmark in WEEE management in Portugal and across the Iberian Peninsula, has closed 2025 with a historical record at its Pedorino plant in Oporto: more than 7,000 tonnes of technological waste managed in a single year, the highest volume since the facility began operations in 2022. In three years, the plant has established itself as one of the leading operators in WEEE treatment in Portugal.

Contracts with the Country’s Leading Waste Management Entities

The surge in volume has been directly linked to the award of new contracts with Portugal’s leading Waste Management Entities. Movilex has been awarded contracts covering the most technically complex categories: televisions, flat screens, large household appliances and fluorescent lamps.

In the fluorescent lamps category, Movilex was the only operator with certified technical capacity to compete, reflecting a differential positioning that is difficult to replicate. In Portugal, Waste Management Entities award contracts through competitive and transparent processes combining a technical evaluation — assessing proximity, certifications and environmental performance — with an economic phase based on lot-by-lot auctions.

“Portugal is a demanding and rigorous market, and breaking an activity record in such a short time is the best proof that we have built something solid. Since 2022 we have shown that our model works in Portugal: tripling our workforce, winning the most demanding contracts and being the only certified operator in complex streams like fluorescent lamps. The goal now is to keep growing with the same rigour.”
— Luis García-Torremocha, CEO of Movilex

More Employment and Strengthened Certifications

The operational growth has been accompanied by a direct impact on local employment. The workforce at the Pedorino plant has grown from 12 professionals in 2022 to 42 by the end of 2025, tripling the headcount in three years. This growth, linked to the incorporation of new treatment lines and the higher operational demands of the awarded contracts, consolidates Movilex as one of the leading industrial employers in the area.

The plant also operates with a system of five certifications that guarantee the quality, safety and traceability of all its processes:

  • ISO 9001 — Quality
  • ISO 14001 — Environment
  • ISO 50001 — Energy management (latest addition)
  • Weeelabex — WEEE sector accreditation
  • End of Waste Status — Sector accreditation

A Reference in WEEE Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula

With this record, Movilex strengthens its position as a benchmark in advanced electronic waste recycling across the Iberian Peninsula. Adding the Oporto plant to its five facilities in Spain —Barcelona, Badajoz, Valencia, Alicante and Burgos—, the company operates an industrial network of six centres addressing the current challenges of the circular economy.

What began in 2022 as an industrial commitment in Portugal has proven, in three years, that the model works: no shortcuts, with rigour and with people at the centre.

The 2025 record is not a finishing line but a growth platform. Movilex is working to expand its WEEE Portugal treatment capacity and incorporate new technical lines to meet the growing demand for certified electronic waste management in the Portuguese market, one of the most demanding in the European Union in terms of environmental regulatory compliance.
